Midweek Pennant Report 2 February 2021

A lovely morning for bowlers to play Pennant. The mild weather conditions allowed bowlers to display their talents on free running greens.

Division 1

Kathy Smiles and her rink of Di Richards, Bill and Janis Kirby led the way for Traralgon with a 23 – 10 win over Trafalgar skipper Mary Holdsworth and her rink of Ken Capper, Paul Dawson and Helen Robertson.  Shirley Whitechurch and her rink of Elaine Swan, Barry Fernance and Janet Woolacott won 26 – 18 over Sue Robinson and her rink of Carol Saunders, Darryl Horner and Carolyn Fox.  Pat Trewin completed the clean sweep for Traralgon with her rink of Derek Hewling, Garry Trewin and Rosie Lorenz winning 20 – 17 over Heather Taylor and her rink of Barbara Evans, Tim Anderson and Pat Tatterson.

This was a vital win for Traralgon as they are determined to stay in touch with ladder leaders Drouin and Trafalgar slipped to fourth place on the ladder in front of some eager teams eyeing off fourth place on the ladder.

Traralgon 16 – 69 defeated Trafalgar 0 – 45

Newborough welcomed Traralgon RSL Jo-Anne Michaels and her rink of Nosha Michaels, Mary Whelan and Lorraine Steel had a 29 – 18 win over Margaret Gibbins and her rink of Ron Osler, Max Gibbins and Julie Sutcliffe.  Frank Clark and her rink of Barry Daley, Bev Luck and Heather Mooney won 21 – 13 over Shirley McKenzie and her rink of John Farquhar, Ross McKenzie and Karyn Brown.  Joan Goldie and her rink of Bob Goldie, Charlie Ward and Julie Jackson had a narrow 20 – 19 win over Margaret Morley and her rink of Joe Ward, Max Aumann and Lorraine Osler to give Newborough a welcome clean sweep which helped them return to third place on the ladder.

Newborough 16 – 70 defeated Traralgon RSL 0 – 50

Drouin travelled to Morwell Club with Maureen Leighton and her rink of Steve Barr, Arthyr Moore and Jan Aubrey winning 25 – 13, Sheryl Atkinson and her rink of Les Firth, Mark Atkinson and Mary Firth were too strong for Beryl Noblett and her rink of Iyoko Yoshimura, Gail Rejmer and Sue Karleusa winning 23 – 14.  Tess Borg and her rink of Roger Rejmer, Nobby Noblett and Bernie Kirkup provided some hope for Morwell Club with a 26 – 12 win over Denise Hamilton and her rink of Graeme Aubrey, David Tayles and Elaine Thorpe.

Drouin 14 – 60 defeated Morwell Club 2 – 53

Warragul looking to sneak past Newborough and Trafalgar with a win over lowly Morwell were unable to defeat a focussed Morwell team keen to rise from the bottom of the ladder.  On her home green Glenda Thomson and her rink of Bill Tumney, Rita Reddiex and Ann Kuhne won 28 – 19 over Gabrielle Draisma and her rink of David Ferguson, Bob Currie and Linda McCoy to give Morwell a geat head start.  With this the only winning Morwell rink Pat Hammond and her Warragul rink of John Vickerman, Graeme Davis and Kerrie Currie started to bridge the gap with a 22 – 20 win over Kerry Wright and her rink of Kevin Pigdon, Danny McKeown and Judy Tumney.  Janette Gallasch and her rink of Ian Belling, Peter Gallasch and Elsie Hefford also had a 25 – 21 win over Shirley Skinner and her rink of Bob Skinner, Jennifer Duncan and Jan Whelan.  These two Warragul wins were not enough to get them a win and a position in the four with Trafalgar losing.  It is always a good effort to win with only one rink up and it must give Morwell some confidence in the remaining weeks of the season.

Next week in Division 1 there are some crucial matches.  Third and fourth teams Newborough and Trafalgar clash at Trafalgar and Warragul knowing a win over visitors Traralgon will be aiming for a win on their home green.  Morwell visits neighbours Morwell Club in a vital match for both teams and Drouin hosts Traralgon RSL with revenge on the agenda following RSL’s shock win over the ladder leaders earlier in the season on a slow Traralgon RSL green due to the rain at that time.

Division 2

Newborough 2 travelled to Warragul 2 and in a close game managed to win all three rinks.  Warraul (2) played well but unfortunately narrowly missed out on any points.  Adrienne Birchall and her rink of Ruth Verhagen, Joy Cadby and Chris Cunningham won 16 – 14 over Gladys Atkinson and her rink of Matt Draisma, Brian Barby and May Baldwin.  Carmel Goss and her team of Denise Ryan, Jenny Cocks and Glenys Perkins won 18 – 16 over Franciska Axford and her rink of Jean Kydd, Ken Brown and Chris Wilkins.  Helen Grubb and her rink of Natalie Lambos, Heather Disisto and Dianne Bertoli won 22 – 17 over the rink of Glynis Mitchell and her team of Keith Wilkins, Greg Mitchell and Alison Matthews.

Morwell Club (2) 14 – 58 defeated Morwell (2) 2 – 52

Traralgon (2) made the long haul to Neerim District and found the hosts not very welcoming.  Pat Fraser-Aurisch led the way with her ink of Gerry Engelstaad, Richard Kerr and Dianne Tame winning 25 – 15 over May Cross and her rink of Barbara Baker, Graham Cross and Maureen Rooney.  Maureen Halligan and her rink of Jim Schoeder, Gerald Winter and Thelma Schoeder won 21 – 11 over Jan Moody and her rink of Jeanette Green, Greg Swan and Muriel Johnson.  Karren sheers and her team of John Rochford, Stephen Halligan and Kay Cousins completed the clean sweep with a 18 – 17 win over Lyn Moffatt and her rink of Hannelore Jeffrey, Bob Dykstra and Barbara Scott.

Neerim District 16 – 64 defeated Traralgon (2) 0 – 43

Next week in Division 2 Morwell Club (2) hosts Neerim District who have struggled in recent weeks on heavy grass greens following rain.  The winner of this match will most likely be in the four at the end of this match.  Traralgon (2) hosts Warragul (2) and Traralgon (2) will be keen for a win after their luckless trip to Neerim District this week.  Newborough (2) hosts local neighbour Moe who would love to knock off the ladder leaders and move up the ladder.  Yinnar needing a win travel to Morwell (2) for what should be an interesting tussle.

Division 3

Newborough (3) travelled to Traralgon (3) and on a free running surface were able to snatch a one shot victory on the last end of the day.  Marcia Evans and her rink of Phil Zapelli, Michael Holroyd and Lyn Akarsu led the way with a 22 – 16 win over Dianne Bau.  First time skipper Ann-Mary Ryan and her rink of Peter Policha, Steve Cunningham and Lyn Madden had a 20 – 15 win over Dettie Wylie’s rink.  Shirley Richardson and her rink of Bob Stephen, John Kong and Marie Gunnulson were the only winners for Traralgon (3) defeating Joan Lee 27 – 20.

Newborough (3) 14 – 59 defeated Traralgon (3) 2 – 58

Yarragon welcomed Traralgon RSL (2) and won well with Kaye McLaren and her rink of Bevan Romans, Kevin Arnold and Jeanette Temple winning 41 – 12 over Joan Lee.  Pam Jones and her rink of Alison Petchel, Gordon Wright and Marie Holt had a 22 – 10 win over Lorraine McClare and to complete the clean sweep Margaret Arnold and her rink of Peter Petschel, Helan Bates and Lindsay Wright won 22 – 17 over Mary Collins.

Yarragon 16 – 85 defeated Traralgon RSL (2) 0 – 39

Garfield travelled to Drouin (3) and Judy Pocklington and her rink of Garry Salomons, Barry Johnston and Susan Stansfield laid the foundations of a solid victory with a 25 – 11 win over Margaret Owens and her rink.  Helene Newton and her Garfield rink of Barrie Smith, Gordon Moxey and Lex Taylor tied 19 – 19 with the Drouin (3) rink of Maureen McMillan and her tem of Marie McDonald, Noel Bullen and Maria Wans.  The lone winning rink for Drouin (3) was Dini Hone and her team of Lorrine Fox, Peter Hone and Lynette Rippon winning 28 – 22 over Maureen Lamport’s rink.  It was not a big enough win to bridge the gap leaving Garfield the winners.

Garfield 13 – 66 defeated Drouin (3) 3 58

Nest week Yarragon travels to the much improved Newborough (3) who are sitting on the edge of the four.  Garfield hosts Traralgon (3) looking to get back on the winning list  and Traralgon RSL (2) have another trip with a visit to ladder leaders Drouin (2).

Division 4

Top team Yallourn North travelled to lowly Drouin (4) and the home team started well with Barbara Watts and her team of Merv Appleyard, Gerald Wakefield and Janice Johnson won 28 – 18 over Diann Thomas and Kathleen Dixon made it a clean sweep with her rink of Maureen Brunet, Lloyd Smith and Pat Yeo winning 19 – 12 over Marce Mallia.

Drouin (4) 10 – 47 defeated Yallourn North 0 – 30

Trafalgar (2) travelled to Moe (2) and the neighbours had an interesting tussle with very little difference in the scores throughout the day.  Margaret Wilson and her team of Fred Martin, Col Carmichael and Mavis Larkin won by two shots 23 – 21 over Lyn Hill from  Trafalgar (2).  Two shots doesn’t seem a lot, however it was enough to give Moe (2) the win despite Trafalgar (2) skipper Margaret Moss and her rink of Helen Brodie, Debra Beary and Sharon McRae defeating Maureen Barley and her rink 16 – 15 leaving Moe (2) the winners by one solitary shot.

Moe (2) 8 – 38 defeated Trafalgar (2) 2 – 37

Next week Moe (2) travels to Yallourn North and Yinnar (2) travels to Trafalgar (2) in two games which will be vital for sides wanting to finish in the top four teams.

Midweek Pennant 15 January 2021

Midweek Pennant resumes on Tuesday with the improving Newborough travelling to Warragul to take on last year’s Premiers who are in need of a win to get closer to the top four teams.  Newborough will be keen to maintain their position in the top four.  Home ground advantage could give Warragul the victory.

Bottom teams Morwell and Traralgon RSL face off at Morwell with the home team desperate for a win to maintain touch with RSL who have the chance to solidify their position in Division 1 for next year without having to rely on other teams to help them maintain their position in the top division.  Morwell should have enough home ground advantage to sneak a win over Morwell.

Traralgon visits Morwell Club with the home team battling to stay in touch with the top four and Traralgon looking to maintain second place of the ladder and the coveted double chance in the finals.  Morwell Club could provide an upset win on their home turf.

Drouin travels to Trafalgar with the home team needing to win to stay in fourth place.  Drouin have struggled at times on the grass, however, the Trafalgar green should be in good condition and Drouin will be favourites to remain top of the ladder.

In Division 2 Morwell Club (2) hosts Warragul (2) and will be aiming for a win to keep in touch with the top four.  Morwell Club (2) tipped to win.  In the other important match Morwell (2) travels to Newborough (2) with Newborough (2) confident of winning on the grass.  Newborough (2) tipped to win.

Top team Traralgon (2) should be too strong for Moe and Neerim District welcomes Yinnar in a match that will see the winner get nearer to a place in the top four and a chance to make the finals and gain promotion to Division 1.  Neerim should get home in a tight tussle.

Following this round will be the round on Australia Day.  We are playing on Australia Day as the late start to the season due to Covid 19 gave us no other choice in being able to fit all matches in prior to Easter.  This may interfere with the plans of some players however this has been a season like no other and is a minor problem compared with many of the situations we have been in through Covid 19.

A number of close games in warm humid weather with the threat of rain with some teams winning with only one rink up making for some nerve racking finishes particularly in Division 2.

Morwell Club 13 – 58 to Traralgon RSL 3 – 51

Warragul had a big win over Trafalgar who found the Warragul green quite difficult compared to their grass green.   Pat Hammond and her rink of John Vickerman, Graeme Davis and Kerri Currie gave Warragul a good start with a 35 – 10 win over Pat Tatterson and her rink of Barbara Evans, Tim Anderson and Mary Holdsworth.  Gabrielle Draisma and her team of David Ferguson, Bob Currie and Margaret Keefe had a 27 – 15 win over Sue Robinson and her rink of Carol Saunders, Tim Fraser and Carolyn Fox.  Janette Gallasch and her rink of Ian Belling, Peter Gallasch and Chris Wilkins won 26 – 15 over Heather Taylor and her rink of Ken Capper, Paul Dawson and Helen Robertson.

In the remaining Division 2 match Betty Burridge and her rink of Harry Wright, Cheryl Reynolds and Jo Leslie from Morwell Club (2) had a 32 – 5 win which was too big a margin for the winning rinks of Pam Allen 22 – 16 and Meredith Kennon 25 – 17 to make up.

Morwell Club (2) 12 – 65 defeated Yinnar 4 – 52

Three Clubs winning with only 1 rink ahead and the other match a draw showed how competitive division 2 is as Clubs rarely win with one team up.

Next week sees some interesting matches in Division 1 with Warragul travelling to Traralgon RSL who have a strong home ground advantage with their grass green.  Trafalgar and Morwell Club should have an interesting tussle at Trafalgar and Newborough travels to Traralgon in what shapes as a competitive match.  In the final match Drouin looking to consolidate their top plae on the ladder travels to Morwell who are looking to rise up the ladder.

Division 2 also looks to have some interesting games with Neerim District hosting Morwell (2), Warragul hosting Moe, Morwell Club (2) travelling to Newborough (2) and Yinnar hosting Traralgon (2).  With the Christmas break approaching all sides will be looking to consolidate their positions on the ladder as they seek to get in the top four positions for finals or in some cases try and avoid the dreaded relegation to a lower division.
